We love everytime of the year in the garden at Abhainn Ri but especially springtime when we await the arrival of the snowdrops. The first sign that the growth has started and we can look forward to welcoming back all the colourful flowers and shrubs once again.
Joe and I love the wide open space with lots of interesting plants to find each year. Guests come from the four corners of the world to visit Wicklow known as the garden of Ireland to view all the superb gardens. They enjoy a restful cup of tea & cake while taking in the Wicklow landscape at Abhainn Ri.
Even if you take the farm trail you can search for all the wild flowers growing since time began.
At Abhainn Ri mindfulness has become part of our daily life and it allows us to live and enjoy the moment. We are located in an area with so much nature and beauty. It is so lovely to be able to spend time outdoors observing the landscape, watching tiny birds, finding wild flowers, viewing the beautiful skies by cloud watching, visiting the farm animals, following the trails through the fields to the lakeshore and simply being present.
Walking through the countryside are therapeutic, combining gentle movement in nature with mindfulness. This can be practiced by walking silently on a trail through the fields or along the shoreline or up to the viewing bench at the hightest point on the farm.
Take note of your surroundings – what you see, hear, smell, taste, feel. Allow your thoughts to pass without attaching to one in particular. If you find you’re getting distracted, that’s fine!
Start again with bringing your attention to the present moment.
Feelings of awe or wonder, gratitude and appreciation often bubble up when giving such attention to nature.
“Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.” – Buddha

We have been living in very uncertain times over the last two months but things will get much better.
During this unexpected free time I have re discovered my love for crafts. I have always loved to cook, bake, sew, paint and knit, a right domestic goddess. I love looking out the window and seeing the wild rabbits all around Abhainn Ri so carefree, but not so happy when they eat the flowers though.
When we were young children our mother always encouraged us to do crafts and we all have a great love for crafting. I remember getting a craft kit for a present it was and toy badger with a lovely flower dress. I could not wait to get started and loved it and instilled a great sense of achievement.
Our mother was a great business woman and she was way ahead of her time and owned and ran a craft shop in Duke lane in Dublin called West Wicklow Crafts and it was our second home as children. Everything in the craft shop was hand made in Ireland and she installed a great love in us for everything hand made.
She encouraged me to make some more toys and some patchwork baby blankets when I was very young and she sold them with great pride in her shop. It was my first introduction running a enterprise which she was nurturing at the time even though I did not see it. I will be forever thankful.
During this very quiet time for us I have re discovered my love for knitting and making toys once again. They brighten my day and I get more joy from giving them away than keeping them for myself. Each one I knit has its own look a personality and they are all very different.
The greatest delight is in giving them away and seeing the joy in others.
